As the launch edition of our brand new Ancestra collection, 蛟 (JIĀO) features a fumé dial in grand feu
enamel that ranges between a pale, silvery blue in the middle to a deep cobalt at its circumference. Beneath
the layers of enamel, the fine-silver dial base features an elaborate textured surface that has been
meticulously hammered by-hand. Reminiscent of the enigmatic surface of the deep ocean, their combined effect
further submerges the edition’s narrative in draconic mythos — returning the Hongshan culture’s 猪龙 (zhū
lóng) to the aquatic domain of the dragon kings of traditional Chinese folklore.

This intricate dial is further complemented by an array of unconventional alternating indices in two
            complimentary variants:

In the first, each odd index is denoted by the characteristic flourishes of traditional Chinese calligraphy,
created especially for us by the talents of Hong Kong calligrapher, Elaine Wong. This numerical set
reimagines the number “11” into an original and stylised representation of the hour in the vein of the
            “watchmaker’s four”.

Its twin, on the other hand, features Western-Arabic markers on its even indices from the mind of designer
Lee Yuen-Rapati. Both sets of numerals draw their inspiration from traditional Chinese bamboo leaf
            calligraphy.

Between these typographic markers, baguette-cut diamonds add a subtle, coruscant touch, marking out the
alternate hours of the day. These are harmoniously framed by another unique iteration of our characteristic
回纹 (huí wén) minute track. Inside of them, hour and minute hands exhibit voluminous tri-planed surfaces —
with fine micro-hammering on the top and high-polished, deeply-concave facets cascading away down either
            side.

蛟 (JIĀO) features a 904L stainless steel case with a stately diameter of 38mm and an extremely compact 46mm
lug-to-lug measurement. The case’s screwed lugs curve downwards sharply to ensure wearability on all wrists,
and at a mere 11.3mm in height, it slips easily under the cuff.

Turned on its back, a 446 character-long poetic ode to 蛟 (JIĀO)’s draconic narrative marks our first-ever
open caseback. The three-quarter plate of our customised Pequignet EPM003 is deeply micro-etched by
high-precision YAG laser to form concentric lines of minute text, conveying a stylised narration of 天问
(tiān wèn), or Heavenly Questions; a poetic assemblage of rhetorical questions attributed to the poet 屈原
(Qūyuán) between 340–278 BCE. These questions ponder ancient Chinese mythos and the nature of the cosmos,
and form a connective thread through time with their continued relevance to this day. Their contents form a
fitting complement to the mythologies that inspire 蛟 (JIĀO)’s case and dial.

A polished nod to the noblest of mythologies
The inaugural edition in our new dress watch collection, Ancestra, 蛟 (JIĀO), draws its form from a folkloric
lineage spanning millennia. With a case inspired by the sinuous forms of the Hongshan jade dragon carvings
(猪龙, zhū lóng) — mankind's very first recorded depictions of dragons, it fuses contemporary design with deep
        cultural significance.

蛟 (JIĀO) also features a hand-hammered, grand feu enamel dial crafted laboriously by the talents of Kong
Lingjun’s enamel workshop, as well as an all-new, heavily customised, high-performance movement by the French
        manufacture, Pequignet.

The arrival of an all-new form : The Ancestra Launch Edition, 蛟 (JIĀO)

A grand feu enamel, hand-hammered dial, crafted by China’s foremost dial enamelers

      Fire and Glass
Front and centre to 蛟 (JIĀO)’s appeal is the enigmatic depth of its grand feu enamel, created through the
binding of molten glass to its hand-hammered dial base.

From a pale, almost-silver mid-dial, this textured baseplate cascades visually away towards its edges,
culminating in a trench-like tone of deep cobalt at its outer circumference. The martéle beneath the
enamel’s glossy sheen gives the dial the illusion of deep water — an effect that takes six cumulative
firings in a 750-850°C kiln to achieve. The complexity of this process results in a high failure rate of
approximately 50%, making the enamelling of these dials an extremely costly and time-consuming endeavour.

蛟 (JIĀO)’s dial hails from the enamel workshop of Mr Kong Ling Jun. A relatively young atelier, the
workshop was founded by Kong in 2007, rising through the ranks in China to become the foremost enamel studio
for watch dials in the country — a status that it earned in 2021, with the national-level designation of
"中国珐琅手表 (北京) 制造中心" (China Enamel Watch [Beijing] Manufacturing Center) by the China Horologe
            Association (中国钟表协会, CHA).

From the depths of draconic origin
All around the world, the figure of the dragon looms large throughout popular culture, yet few recognise the
            provenance of its tale.

Between 4700-2900 BC, the Hongshan culture of Northeast China developed a startling affinity with the
handicraft of jade carving. Uncovered amongst their ancient burial sites was a curious, C-shaped jade object
with the snout of a pig, a coiled, serpentine body and a flowing mane.

This 猪龙 (zhū lóng), translated literally as pig-dragon, would come to represent humanity’s very first
known depiction of a dragon, as well as one of the earliest demonstrations of cultural sophistication and
            craftsmanship in China.

Ancestra reimagines the mythology around this draconic depiction with its case, conceived through the
combined eyes of the talented Sifan Guo and Alfred Chan.

Interpreting the 猪龙 (zhū lóng)’s sinuous curves as elegant lugs, these encircle a finely brushed,
pebble-like mid-case and mirror the jade dragon’s owns curves and coiled form, and tribute to these
            early-Chinese cultural and artisanal traditions.

The detached construction of the lugs allow us to finish the case to a far higher degree, with sharper
transitions between finishes, as well as a greater array of finishing treatments. These lugs are secured to
the mid-case with internal screws and intricately engraved, external bolts featuring a traditional Chinese
回纹 (huí wén) motif, adding a minute, yet sophisticated detail to the complex construction of the watch.

This edition of Ancestra will come on a quick-release, full-grain leather strap that is meticulously
        hand-stitched by Chinese artisans.

It comes with a luxuriously textured Epsom leather upper and a lining made from Zermatt, one of the most-prized
leather linings in the industry — made from Alpine calfskin in Tanneries Haas

This strap will be secured by an attentively designed stainless steel buckle with hand-applied mirror-polished
bevels, crips exterior angles and fine satin brushing. The interior of the buckle has also been embellished by a
        lacquer-filled seal of our logo.

The Pequignet Calibre EPM03: France’s premier, complete manufacture
From the beginnings of Atelier Wen, watchmaking has been the brand’s canvas for the celebration and
uplifting of the rich traditions of Chinese craftsmanship and culture. Parallel to this, we see it as our
responsibility to constantly pursue the elevation of our mechanical standards and provide the best-possible
stage for these crafts to shine.

Ancestra marks our very first foray beyond the Chinese watchmaking ecosystem in pursuit of this, with a
newly-minted partnership with Pequignet, France’s oldest true manufacture in continuous operation.

In their Calibre EPM03, we find one of the finest scalable modern calibres available, boasting a generous 65
hours of power reserve, a hyper-efficient, pawl-based “Pellaton-style” winding system and a patented tooth
profile within the winding assembly delivering improved efficiency and reducing wear-and-tear.

The movement is regulated to the chronometer-defining accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day, and Pequignet goes
above and beyond the COSC-required 10 days — with 16 continuous days of observation and testing, thus
comfortably meeting the standards of the Observatoire Chronométrique de Besançon. Following this
comprehensive testing, each movement is further adjusted manually in 6 positions and for temperature
            fluctuations.

The elaborate micro-etching on this rendition of the EPM03 imbues the movement with continuity, preserving
its connection to China’s rich cultural traditions, reflecting the mythological inspirations that 蛟
(JIĀO)’s case and dial enact even as we transition to a movement of French origin.

This main bridge took an enormous amount of work to perfect, with the 0.25mm thinness of the three-quarter
plate often distorting due to the laser’s heat. The engravings themselves are made to a depth of 0.10mm, and
the degree of legibility and finish on this unique approach are extremely uncommon throughout the industry.
The text is framed beautifully by the generous anglage present on each edge, and stands out distinctly
against the ratchet return wheel and balance bridge, both of which exhibit an edge-to-edge sheen through
meticulous rounds of black-polishing with increasingly fine abrasives.
